HBO Max is developing a new Spanish crime mystery drama inspired by Tor, the remote Pyrenean village whose history of unresolved deaths has made it one of Spain’s most intriguing true crime locations.
HBO Max is expanding its Spanish scripted slate with a new drama inspired by the story of Tor, an isolated mountain community in the Catalan Pyrenees where a series of tragic and still-unsolved events have fuelled decades of mystery.
The project is being developed by Suma Content, the production company founded by filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, widely known as Los Javis. The duo, whose credits include La Mesías and La bola negra, will serve as executive producers.
Screenwriters Fran Araújo, known for Un año, una noche, and Eduard Sola, whose credits include Casa en Llamas, are behind the series. Suma Content is developing the project in collaboration with journalist Carles Porta and Luminol Media.
What is HBO Max’s Tor-inspired series about?
The drama will revisit the events, stories and legends surrounding Tor, a tiny and geographically isolated village in the Catalan Pyrenees.
The area has become particularly well known among true crime audiences because of its history of unexplained deaths and long-running disputes. HBO Max says the series will combine mystery, suspense and human drama, while exploring both the people at the centre of the story and the landscape that has shaped the community.
According to Guillermo Farré, head of local original production at HBO Max Spain, the project brings together several prominent creative voices from the country’s film and television industry. Farré also highlighted Araújo and Sola’s character-driven storytelling and the distinctive creative approach of Calvo and Ambrossi.
How will nature shape the drama?
Calvo and Ambrossi said their ambition is to create a series in which the natural environment is more than a backdrop.
The filmmakers want the mountains, landscapes and physical spaces surrounding Tor to function almost as characters in their own right, while the narrative follows different voices across several decades.
That approach could give the series a distinctive identity within the increasingly crowded crime and mystery genre, combining the narrative pull of an unresolved real-world story with a strong sense of place.
The currently untitled project remains in development at HBO Max Spain.
