Investigation Discovery (ID) has greenlit Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos, a three-part documentary series examining the life, crimes, and legacy of one of America’s most notorious serial killers.
Produced by Fremantle-backed Arrow Media, the series is set to premiere on September 30 on ID, with same-day streaming availability on HBO Max in the United States.
The documentary traces Aileen Wuornos’ story from the murders of seven male clients in Florida between 1989 and 1990 through her arrest, years on death row, and eventual execution in 2002. Rather than relying solely on conventional interviews and archival footage, the production incorporates advanced digital replication and visual effects alongside scripted dramatizations, with Morag Peacock portraying Wuornos.
According to ID President Jason Sarlanis, the project aims to push the boundaries of true-crime storytelling by using new filmmaking technologies to offer audiences a more immersive understanding of the case. To ensure authenticity, the creative team worked closely with law enforcement officials, people who knew Wuornos personally, actors, and visual effects artists, with every recreated sequence informed by court records and firsthand testimony.
