HBO is adapting the real-life trial of Louise Woodward into a limited series called The Trial of Louise Woodward.
HBO has ordered a five-episode series starring Meghann Fahy about the British au pair Louise Woodward’s trial for murdering eight-month-old Matthew Eappen, the baby in her care. The series is created, written and executive produced by Matthew Barry. Oscar and Emmy winner Susanne Bier will direct and executive produce the series.
Big Light Productions founder Frank Spotnitz will executive produce the show alongside Emily Feller, Antoine Douaihy and Tobi de Graaff, Senior Vice President of Commercial at Sky Studios.
The Trial of Louise Woodward will follow how, in 1997, the 18-year-old Louise Woodward was accused of fatally shaking the baby she was caring for while working for an American host family.. A media firestorm was set off as the trial unfolded in the British and American public eye. Woodward was initially found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The trial judge later reduced the conviction to involuntary manslaughter. Woodward was released after serving 279 days.
The case has previously been the subject of two UK documentaries (one by ITV, one by Channel 4).

Production is scheduled to begin in August 2026. The Trial of Louise Woodward is expected to premiere in 2027.
