Lightbox is turning one of the internet era’s strangest mass phenomena into a new documentary for Hulu. Clown Panic will examine the wave of reported clown sightings that spread across the US and several other countries in 2016, with the film set to premiere on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally in time for Halloween.
The sightings involved people claiming to have encountered clowns in unusual locations, including woods and areas near schools. Reports emerged not only across the US but also in the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, helping the phenomenon develop into a wider cultural panic.

From Internet Rumours to Global Phenomenon
Directed by Lightbox’s Ed Perkins, Clown Panic will explore how a series of unexplained and often unverified sightings evolved into an international story. The documentary promises to examine both the unsettling nature of the reports and the social forces that helped the phenomenon spread.
Described as a darkly humorous and emotional look at the episode, the film will trace how an unusual urban legend gained momentum and became a global media story.
Lightbox Behind the Documentary
Clown Panic is produced by Lightbox co-founders Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn, with the company’s Creative Director Suzanne Lavery serving as executive producer.
The documentary will premiere on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in international markets ahead of Halloween.
