Blumhouse Television, a titan in the horror and suspense genre, is set to bring Shusuke Shizukui’s bestselling Japanese psychological thriller Hi No Ko (Sparks) to American audiences after officially acquiring the rights to the novel.

The gripping narrative centers on a retired judge whose life is upended when a former serial murder suspect he once acquitted moves in right next door.

While the neighbor initially appears to be the embodiment of charm and goodwill, the story unearths a chilling reality: an obsessive need for affection that spirals into extreme violence at the first sign of rejection, leading to the systematic isolation and manipulation of the judge’s family.

This US adaptation of Sparks will be spearheaded by Krystal Houghton Ziv, known for her work on The Purge and Wolf Pack, who is set to write the pilot and serve as executive producer. The project stands on a foundation of proven global success, as the original novel has sold over 770,000 copies and its 2016 Japanese television adaptation previously dominated audience satisfaction ratings.

Under the Blumhouse banner, the series promises a high-tension exploration of a sociopath who uses “excessive kindness” as a weapon to tear a household apart from the inside.
