True crime specialists Peninsula Television have delivered a compelling new 90-minute documentary, Shergar: The Racehorse and the IRA, set to air on Channel 4.
The film offers an in-depth investigation into one of the most enduring and audacious mysteries in sports history. The documentary chronicles the meteoric rise of the wonderhorse Shergar, who transformed from a Derby-winning champion into one of the world’s most valuable stallions under the ownership of the Aga Khan.
The narrative shifts to the chilling events of February 1983, when armed men abducted the stallion from the Ballymany Stud in County Kildare. The incident triggered a massive ransom plot and remains an unsolved enigma nearly four decades later.
As suspicion fell on the Provisional IRA amid the tensions of the Troubles, the investigation was hampered by fear, fragmented intelligence, and a syndicate unwilling to meet the kidnappers’ demands. More than forty years later, Shergar’s fate remains one of sport’s most chilling and enduring mysteries.
Through in-depth interviews, rare archival footage, and expert analysis, the series meticulously reconstructs the night Shergar vanished and the extraordinary investigation that followed – unpicking competing theories, revealing new testimony, and confronting unsettling possibilities.
With unexpected twists and sharp investigative storytelling, Shergar: The Racehorse and the IRA is set to be a must-watch for true crime audiences.
David Harvey, Executive Producer of Shergar: The Racehorse and the IRA, said:
“Shergar’s disappearance remains one of the most extraordinary and unresolved stories in sporting history, and this series brings fresh insight into the mystery through first-hand testimony and detailed investigation. We are pleased to be bringing this fascinating story to Channel 4.”
Jonathan Ford, Managing Director, Sphere Abacus, adds:
