The new crime drama series Sherlock & Daughter had a strong streaming debut at the beginning of the month on Max, climbing to the number four spot on the platform’s in-app top 10. At the same time, it delivered its best ratings of the season on its U.S. network home, the CW, proving the everlasting interest in the legendary detective.
The show follows Sherlock Holmes as he tries to solve a sinister case that has eluded even him. As Holmes delves deeper, he realizes that pursuing the truth could put his closest friends in danger. Then, he teams up with Amelia Rojas, a young woman whose mother was mysteriously murdered. They work together to unravel the case and find definitive proof of Amelia’s claim that she is Holmes’s daughter.
Sherlock & Daughter stars Emmy-nominated actor David Thewlis as Sherlock Holmes, Blu Hunt as Amelia Rojas, a determined young Native American woman, and International Emmy and BAFTA Award winner Dougray Scott as Moriarty. Created, written, and executive produced by Brendan Foley, the show is helmed by The Closer‘s James Duff as the showrunner.
Foley has highlighted that Thewlis’ Sherlock is a “classic Sherlock,” but with a twist: “He’s a lion in winter. He’s older, grumpier, and then we’re able to play with the other side. Amelia lands in like a spunky meteorite, right into poor old Holmes’ tidy little world.”
Celebrated both by the critics and the audience in the U.S. and Australia, Sherlock & Daughter has also earned an early Golden Nymph Award nomination for Best Global Fiction Series at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival. However, the series did not win the category.
Sherlock & Daughter aired on the CW Network on April 16 and has since seen ratings rise nearly 20% after the Max premiere, compared to its debut week. It ranked as the American channel CW’s top scripted series on linear television and its second most popular series on digital platforms. However, there has been no official announcement yet about a potential second season.
