Amazon’s Prime Video has handed a straight-to-series order to Calamities, a high-stakes crime thriller created by David Weil and executive produced by actor Glen Powell.
Set in a quiet Texas border town, Calamities explores a chaotic chain of events triggered by a drug deal gone wrong, promising a character-driven narrative that “doesn’t blink.” Weil, who previously led high-profile Prime Video projects such as Hunters, Citadel, and Solos, will serve as the writer, showrunner, and director for the series.
The production is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and executive producers Glen Powell (via his Please Enjoy banner), Natalie Laine Williams, and Dan Cohen of Barnstorm.
This project further solidifies the strategic partnership between Weil and Amazon MGM Studios, as the studio is also producing his upcoming feature film directorial debut, Tyrant. Following his track record of delivering intense, star-studded dramas, Weil’s latest venture is described as a gripping addition to the platform’s thriller slate.
