Jamie Lee Curtis has confirmed that the Murder, She Wrote reboot is officially underway. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet for Freakier Friday, the actress teased the project, saying it is “happening”.
“We’re a minute away. But very excited. Very excited,” she added. “But I’m tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting. I have a couple of other things to hustle and then I’ll get to enjoy that work.”
In the reboot, Jamie Lee Curtis will portray the iconic role of Jessica Fletcher, a crime novelist-turned-amateur detective, originally played by Angela Lansbury in the beloved TV series.
Lansbury’s original Murder, She Wrote aired on CBS for 12 seasons between 1984 and 1996, peaking at 40 million weekly viewers and averaging around 25 million per episode in the later seasons. Four TV movies followed the series, which also inspired books and games. Since Lansbury’s last on-screen appearance as Fletcher in 2003, fans have been hoping for the character’s return.
The screenplay for the reboot is being written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who both worked on Dumb Money (2023) and Orange Is the New Black (2017) as writers. Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Amy Pascal are joining them as producers.
Meanwhile, Curtis is also preparing for the release of Freakier Friday, which is set to hit theaters on August 8. The sequel to the fantasy comedy Freaky Friday (2003) brings Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan back together as the leads.
The release date for Murder, She Wrote has not yet been confirmed, but according to Curtis, there are still some projects to be completed before production fully begins. For those feeling nostalgic, the original series is now streaming on Prime Video.
