Hulu has officially ordered a three-part true-crime docuseries titled Hunting Whitey Bulger, which promises to provide an in-depth exploration of the life and criminal empire of the legendary Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger.

Hunting Whitey Bulger features acclaimed actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck as its narrator; in addition to providing the voiceover, Affleck serves as an executive producer through his production company, Artists Equity.

Hunting Whitey Bulger docuseries aims to offer the “definitive inside story” of Bulger’s life, utilizing fresh evidence that includes previously unseen handwritten letters from prison and exclusive, on-camera interviews with key figures who are speaking out for the first time.

The narrative will meticulously chart Bulger’s 16-year run as a fugitive, his eventual capture in 2011, and the events leading up to his death in prison. Bulger’s notorious career has long captivated Hollywood, serving as the primary inspiration for iconic films such as Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, starring Jack Nicholson, and the Johnny Depp-led biographical drama Black Mass.

The project is directed by Zackary Canepari, known for his work on Flint Town, and boasts an experienced creative team that includes Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, authors of the book Hunting Whitey: The Inside Story of the Capture and Killing of America’s Most Wanted Crime Boss, who serve as executive producers. By combining investigative reporting with a high-profile creative team, the series looks to be a significant addition to Hulu’s growing catalog of true-crime programming.
