Banijay Rights has announced that the BBC has acquired a new Swedish-language adaptation of Wallander, starring Vikings actor Gustaf Skarsgård as the iconic detective Kurt Wallander. The crime drama will be available to UK audiences on BBC iPlayer and BBC Four.
Produced by Jarowskij/YellowBird, part of Banijay Nordic, the new adaptation was originally commissioned for Swedish broadcaster TV4. The first season consists of three 90-minute films, offering a contemporary interpretation of Henning Mankell’s internationally bestselling crime novels.
Gustaf Skarsgård Takes on the Role of Kurt Wallander
Set in the present day, the new Wallander follows the detective at a turning point in his personal and professional life. At 42, Kurt Wallander is struggling with the breakdown of his marriage, a strained relationship with his daughter and the emotional consequences of his demanding career.
As he investigates complex criminal cases, Wallander must also confront his own vulnerabilities, including his dependence on alcohol, lack of sleep and the psychological burden of unresolved investigations. The adaptation aims to explore the character’s personal struggles while maintaining the investigative storytelling that has made the franchise an international success.
Skarsgård, who also contributed creatively behind the camera, brings a new perspective to the detective. According to Jarowskij/YellowBird CEO Elin Kvist, the series presents Wallander as both an exceptionally talented investigator and a deeply vulnerable individual navigating the challenges of modern life.
Banijay Rights Secures International Deals for Wallander
Alongside the BBC acquisition, Banijay Rights has secured several international distribution agreements for the new crime drama.
MHz Choice has acquired the series for the United States and Canada, while European broadcasters NPO in the Netherlands, VRT in Belgium, HRT in Croatia and LNK in Lithuania have also licensed the adaptation.
The series has additionally been selected for the GreenLit showcase at Rome’s MIA market, where it will receive an exclusive industry preview.
Written by Antonia Pyk, the production is directed by Molly Hartleb (Riding in Darkness, Top Dog) alongside filmmakers Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja (Aniara, Egghead Republic). Glenn Lund serves as producer.
A New Chapter for an International Crime Drama Franchise
Based on Henning Mankell’s globally successful novels, Wallander remains one of the most recognizable franchises in Scandinavian crime fiction. The books have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and have been translated into over 40 languages.
Previous Swedish television and film adaptations aired between 1994 and 2013, while the BBC also produced an English-language version starring Kenneth Branagh, whose performance earned him a BAFTA Award.
With Gustaf Skarsgård now taking on the central role, the latest adaptation introduces a younger, more emotionally complex Kurt Wallander to international audiences, continuing the franchise’s legacy within contemporary crime television.
