Channel 4 has commissioned a two-part documentary examining the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors scandal, in which a police investigation uncovered dozens of bodies and left hundreds of families searching for answers.
Produced by Brinkworth Productions, The Body Thief (working title) will revisit a case that shocked the UK after Humberside Police received concerns about the treatment of deceased people at a funeral home in March 2024.
The subsequent investigation identified more than 300 victims. Some families discovered that their relatives had not been cremated and that the ashes returned to them did not belong to their loved ones.
The Body Thief to Follow Investigation and Families’ Search for Answers
Police discovered 35 bodies in varying states of decomposition at the Legacy premises. Investigators also found ashes belonging to more than 100 people scattered across the funeral home’s sites in Hull and the surrounding area.
The two-part series, comprising two 60-minute episodes, will follow the investigation and custody interviews, with exclusive access to police and families affected by the case. It will explore the search for answers from both the relatives seeking clarity about what happened to their loved ones and the detectives working to establish the facts.
The Body Thief was commissioned for Channel 4 by Anna Miralis, senior commissioning editor for documentaries. Lorna-Dawn Creanor and Malcolm Brinkworth serve as executive producers.
