Blue Ant Media announced that it has acquired U.S. and international licensing rights for The Trial of Alec Baldwin, the feature documentary directed by award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy, diving into the personal and legal fallout of the actor after the accidental and fatal on- set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
What is The Trial of Alec Baldwin about?
The film’s official logline reads “On October 21, 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins is killed on a movie set by a prop gun held by the actor Alec Baldwin. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, virtually no one doubts that it was an accident and a deeply traumatizing experience for everyone involved.” Kennedy looks into how the incident evolved into a high-profile criminal case, with celebrity, public perception and a media storm following the shooting on the set of Rust.
The documentary, which follows the filmmaker’s access to Baldwin (which began in 2023), is said to feature previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage. It takes a closer look at the gap between the facts of a legal case and the narrative built around a public figure, as well as the effects of headlines, social media, and paparazzi coverage on public judgment.
According to Kennedy, “The documentary aims to offer audiences a different perspective on a story that captured worldwide attention.”

Rory Kennedy, Mark Bailey and Julia Marchesi produced The Trial of Alec Baldwin. It was executive produced by Jared Underwood, Andrew C. Robinson, Colin Marshall, Todd Thompson, Rita Powers, Tanner Cusumano, Rob Guillermo, Ray Maiello, Louis Krubich, Dan Fried, Randy Jones Toll and Steven Toll.
Valentina Daley, VP Acquisitions, Blue Ant Rights & Streaming, acquired the title, which is being distributed globally following its launch in Cannes. The documentary will premiere theatrically in select U.S. theaters this October, with Abramorama handling U.S. theatrical licensing rights.
The Trial of Alec Baldwin is set to premiere on October 1st.
