Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit the RoboCop series after a lengthy development process.
The series is written by Peter Ocko, who also serves as executive producer and showrunner. James Wan is attached to the project as an executive producer on behalf of Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
The story follows a giant technology conglomerate that transfers the consciousness of a fallen police officer into a powerful robot and integrates it into the city’s police force.
RoboCop was among the first MGM properties earmarked for television adaptation following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. The project becomes the latest MGM adaptation to receive a series order, following Elle and Barbershop for Prime Video, as well as The Magnificent Seven for MGM+.
Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, the screenwriters of the original 1987 RoboCop film, will also join the project as executive producers.
James Wan said the series will bring the franchise’s enduring themes of technology, identity, and the role of corporations in society to a new generation of viewers.
First released in 1987, the RoboCop franchise follows Detroit police officer Alex Murphy, who is fatally wounded in the line of duty and brought back to life as a cybernetic law enforcement officer.
Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, said the series will honor the spirit of the original film while offering a fresh and contemporary take for today’s audiences.
