Alex Michaelides’ ‘The Silent Patient’ Heads to the Big Screen

Sony Pictures has joined the feature film adaptation of Alex Michaelides’ bestselling novel The Silent Patient, with Annapurna and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment producing the project.

The adaptation has been placed on a fast-track development schedule, with the filmmakers aiming to hire a screenwriter in the coming months.

The story follows celebrated painter Alicia Berenson, who murders her husband and then never speaks another word. Her silence makes her infamous, while psychotherapist Theo Faber becomes determined to uncover the truth behind her refusal to speak, leading him toward a series of shocking revelations.

First published in 2019, The Silent Patient debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Seller list and remained there for more than 200 weeks. The Silent Patient has sold over 12 million copies worldwide and has been published in 51 countries.

Sony Pictures has built a strong track record with literary adaptations, including It Ends With Us, Little Women, and Where the Crawdads Sing. Plan B Entertainment’s adaptation credits include The Big Short, World War Z, Women Talking, Nickel Boys, and Eat Pray Love, while Annapurna’s recent slate features The Invite, I Love Boosters, The Testament of Ann Lee, and the Oscar-nominated animated film Nimona.
