Ilaria Tuti’s ‘Teresa Battaglia’ Series Adapted for Screen

The first book of Ilaria Tuti’s Teresa Battaglia crime novel series, Flowers Over the Inferno, has been adapted for the screen. The series, which premiered last February on the Italian channel Rai 1, attracted great attention from the Italian audience.

The first book of Italian author Ilaria Tuti’s series, Flowers Over the Inferno, has sold more than 70 thousand copies in Italy and has been translated into 14 languages. The second novel of the series, The Sleeping Nymph, was published in 2021. Madre d’ossa, the last book in the series of five books, was published in June 2023.

‘Teresa Battaglia’ Series

Tuti’s crime novel series follows Superintendent Teresa Battaglia. Teresa is a woman in her 60s and diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, investigating murders in a small town in Italy. While struggling with Alzheimer’s, Teresa is forced to conduct a murder investigation and faces a great dilemma when she needs her intuition and memory the most.

In our interview with Tuti, the author states that she wrote the first book of the series between 2015 and 2017 and that the character of Teresa was circling in her mind before she started writing. She also emphasizes that Teresa, who presents a very realistic detective portrait, stands out especially with her compassion.

‘Flowers Over the Inferno’ Series Plot

Superintendent Teresa Battaglia and her team are on the hunt for a serial killer who has emerged in a small town in Italy. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Teresa must overcome her illness and find the serial killer targeting vulnerable children.

The series stars Elena Sofia Ricci, Gianluca Gobbi and Giuseppe Spata. Created by one of Italy’s oldest independent production companies, Publispei, the series is directed by Carlo Carlei.

The series has been sold to SBS in Australia, Walter Presents in the UK, and Antenaplay in Romania. It is known that other books in the series will also be adapted for the screen.
